Legends have it that gigantic fire-breathing reptiles with wings, lion's claws and serpentine tails ruled the skies. Incarnations of evil, these blood-thirsty creatures of the Middle Ages preyed on livestock and virgin maidens and hoarded gold and precious jewels in their dragons' lairs. With the advent of Christianity and knighthood, the end of the dragon was near. For these Christian warriors, hunting dragons became a most worthy pursuit. The ancient Druidic veneration of serpents and dragons led to the use of dragons as heraldic emblems by the Celts, thereby harnessing the awesome protective power and fear engendered by the dragon as a symbol.
