Falcons are known as the preeminent birds of prey. Renowned for their aerial speed (180 mph in a dive) and agility, falcons attack their prey with their claws and kill wit their short, hooked beaks. In the ages prior to the development of firearms, birds of prey were trained for hunting other birds and small game. In some instances, only royalty were allowed to own and train these birds of prey. This sport of hunting with falcons, known as falconry, came to be known as "the sport of kings." In ancient Egypt, Horus, the animal god of the sky, had the head of a falcon. And in hieroglyphic script, the falcon represented Egyptian royalty.
