In the parched deserts of the Australian "Outback", aboriginal peoples, rich in tradition and metaphysically tied to the land, have lived for thousands of years. From generation to generation, the mythical ancestors of the Aborigines have passed down their artistry and designs. Aboriginal design usually illustrates specific myths about individual happenings rather than abstract ideas in an unfolding narrative history. Common to most Aboriginal groups are designs employing cross-hatching, lines or dots. Many of the abstract, geometric expressions of these artists have meaning only for the artist himself.
