A powerfully symbolic creature in early mythology, the griffin, a beast with the body, hind legs and tail of a lion and the head, wings and claws of an eagle, had dominion over the earth and the sky. With the strength of the lion, the intelligence of the eagle and the command of earth and sky, the griffin became an early symbol of the duality (divine and human) of Jesus Christ. The griffin also came to be an enemy of satanic demons. As one of the most favored hybrid creatures of the Middle Ages, the griffin was prominently portrayed in medieval heraldry.
