In the early Middle Ages, all gentlemen were considered soldiers, and their weapons were family heirlooms ceremoniously passed from generation to generation. These early soldiers, suited in battle armor, emblazoned their shields, helmets, and standards with symbols identifying their family, tribal, or clan affiliations. These "coats of arms" could only be granted by kings and noblemen. In the beginning, coats of arms were used to identify friend from foe. Over time, family coats of arms achieved great symbolic importance by engendering feelings of deep pride and loyalty for those who bore arms. Medieval weaponry depicted on these coats of arms are called heraldic arms.

Our Heraldic Arms money clip appliqué portrays an ornate helmet superimposed over crossed swords with fleur-de-lis appointments. The appliqué is bordered by a repeating design suggesting castle walls.
