Approximately 2500 years ago, the Celts, early inhabitants of Europe, England and Ireland, developed an artistic style emphasizing detailed patterns of entwined spirals and curves with highly stylized versions of plants and animals. Before the 8th century, these characteristic patterns and themes of early Celtic art evolved into elaborately carved designs on the great stone crosses erected as memorials over graves or holy locations. These crosses came to be known as Irish high crosses, ring crosses, or simply, Celtic crosses. These early Celtic crosses featured a Latin cross, signifying the Christian faith, with its arms enclosed by a circle, signifying the power of the sun and eternity, symbolically uniting heaven and earth. In earlier Celtic times, the Celtic cross denoted a pagan symbol of fertility and life - the cross representing male potency and the circle, female power.

A rich tapestry of woven Celtic designs carved in relief adorns our Celtic Cross.
