The Christian military expeditions undertaken between the eleventh and fourteenth centuries by the knights of Europe to regain control of the Holy Land from the Moslems are collectively known as "The Crusades." The notion of saving Christianity's sacred shrines was an act of devotion to God and king and fulfilled one's role as a soldier of Christ. These early crusaders adorned their tunics and shields with the cross, the principal symbol of Christianity. In fact, the word "crusade" is derived from the Latin word for cross, "crux.
Our Crusader pendant is embellished with such a shield emblazoned with a crusader cross crossed broadswords, and knights helmet.
