As the king of beasts, the lion occupies a position of unquestioned nobility in the animal world. Symbolic of great strength, nobility and courage, the lion became associated with, and in turn symbolic of, the royal sovereignty of medieval kings and other lesser royalty. Stylized versions of the lion appeared on the arms, standards, seals and flags of the kings and their warrior knights. Lions so depicted on arms and other armorial bearings are known as "heraldic" lions. The winged lion, or Lion of St. Mark, is an example of the countless ways in which lions have been portrayed in medieval heraldry.
Our Winged Lion cufflinks, studs and tie tacks feature a classical profile of a medieval heraldic lion sculpted on a shield.
