With a history going back thousands of years, the oriental dragon, in contrast with its diabolical Western counterpart, is often portrayed as intelligent and benevolent. Oriental dragons are a composite of earthly animals: the body of a snake, the scales of a fish, the head of a camel, the horns of a giant stag, the eye of a hare, ears like a bull, neck like an iguana, the belly of a frog, paws like a tiger, and the claws of an eagle. Invariably, they are also shown to have lion-like fur around their necks, chins, and elbows with two long whiskers from their snouts. Oriental dragons protected and commanded the heavens and skies, rivers and seas, and the earth and underworld. They have long been associated with the elements, power and good fortune.
