Living in a supernatural world infused with gods and alive with spiritual power, the Mayas developed a highly complex and interwoven mythology in which living men became gods and gods themselves were continuously evolving and transforming into a tapestry of mystical theology. In interpreting the cosmic and supernatural orders, the Mayas developed multiple calendars based upon incredibly complex astronomical and mathematical computations. Their calendar was more precise and utilitarian than the Julian calendar adopted in Europe centuries later. Their ornate artistic traditions rival those of ancient Egypt and China. The Mayas, creators of a hieroglyphic writing system, were also master architects and builders, sea-going traders and merchants, and farmers and warriors. The descendants of the Mayas still inhabit the jungles of Mexico and Central America, but their great civilization has vanished, but not without a legacy of magnificent city/temple complexes.
