The Christian military expeditions undertaken between the eleventh and fourteenth centuries by the knights of Europe to regain control of the Holy Land from the Moslems are collectively known as “The Crusades.” The notion of saving Christianity’s sacred shrines was an act of devotion to God and king and fulfilled one’s role as a soldier of Christ. These early crusaders adorned their tunics and shields with the cross, the principal symbol of Christianity. In fact, the word “crusade” is derived from the Latin word for cross, “crux.”

Virtus et Honor … Strength and Honor (Latin) is the famous charge given by the Roman General Maximus in the film Gladiator as a valiant inspiration to his legions before the battle with the Barbarians. As an oath and a code, Virtus et Honor exemplifies the warrior ethos not only of ancient Rome, but of all warriors throughout the ages.
