During the Etruscan period of early Italy, two wheeled, horse drawn carriages known as chariots were used as vehicles for war, racing or ceremonial purposes. Chariots were drawn either by two or four horses. The greatest racetrack of them all, the Circus Maximus in Rome, featured colored chariot teams in approximately six-mile races for the entertainment of the early Romans. Victorious charioteers received purses of gold and were hailed as heroes.
Our Charioteer ring features a winged god charioteer in profile from the Etruscan period.
