Byzantium as a geographical term refers to the Eastern Roman Empire and its culture during the Middle Ages. Byzantium, in being the crossroads between the East and West, exerted a great influence on the succeeding cultures in the Asia Minor region. From the fourth to the fifteenth century, Byzantine artistry reached the level of that of a major world culture. Byzantine jewelry fabrication techniques, notably engraving, embossing, filigree, granulation, and enameling, were inherited from the earlier Greco-Roman period. Byzantium further refined these techniques on the detailed and lavish decoration that glorified God and the Emperor through harmony, symmetry, and the use of brilliant materials and colors.
Our Byzantine Shield cufflinks exhibit the evolving influence of many of these jewelry fabrication techniques and artistic design elements.
