In the world of ancient Egyptians, there was great preoccupation with death. Worship of the gods of the underworld, construction of the pyramids (burial tombs) and mummification of the deceased were more than morbid fascinations with death; they also indicated complementary passion for the afterlife. And so, many hieroglyphic symbols came to be associated with the afterlife and with rebirth: the "ankh", (a T-shaped cross with a loop at the top) is the hieroglyphic sign for life and has come to symbolize the breath of life; the "scarab" or dung beetle, came to be associated with re-generation and resurrection in the afterlife; the "phoenix" is a mythological bird revered by the ancient Egyptian sun god, is said to have had a five hundred life span, at the end of which it was consumed by fire to ashes, and out of these ashes, a new phoenix arose, symbolic of resurrection. In a battle to avenge the death of his father and to become the new pharoah of Egypt, Horus lost his eye. It was restored by the god Thoth. The "eye of Horus" became a symbol of protection for both the living and the dead.

Our Egyptian ring celebrates life by including these popular hieroglyphic symbols: the ankh, scarab, phoenix and the eye of Horus, all carved in relief.
